Pulmonary fibrosis occurs when scar tissue in the lungs prevents the diffusion of oxygen into the bloodstream. The inflammation is often caused by certain medications, chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis, prolonged exposure to down feathers or some autoimmune diseases, but can also occur for reasons unknown.
