Chapters Transcript Video Q&A With Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's Physician-Scientist David H. Rowitch, MD, PhD We have a commitment to including research in our clinical care because we think all patients and families should have the option to participate in research which is where innovative care is often tested and that could provide them benefits. Second, our staff is highly motivated to be involved in research and so we want to engage our staff in providing these opportunities for patients and families. Genome sequencing is a technique that can assess the over 6 billion base pairs of DNA that exist in every cell in our body. That's the whole genome. And so for a child who is intensively ill, for example, a child with a seizure, for a child with cancer, where we need to have the diagnosis, you know, ultra fast, amazingly we can distill all of that information from the genome down to a test that is that rapid. We will be performing whole genome sequencing and ideally offering it to all children um that are admitted to Gin Children's and we'd like to also incorporate the sister hospitals that exist as part of our network in the valley in the greater Los Angeles area. And make this a new tool that we can use consistently throughout our system. This is a test that really can be very helpful when a baby is born in understanding what might be a serious genetic condition or a serious medical condition, but also we think that the genome packs in information that can help us predict future health risks. The birth cohort study that we're proposing at GEN Children's is to address that big question what will the newborn screen of the future look like and how can we make it most effective and beneficial? To do that we need to collect a lot of data on patients and families who are willing to participate and so we, we plan to offer as a research study a birth cohort assessment where the genome will be taken in the baby. I think we're going to focus on babies coming from the neonatal ICU because they unfortunately you have risks of future health events. Created by
